Tour Overview
The 8-day Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the finest way to climb Kilimanjaro — combining the pristine western wilderness approach with a superior acclimatization profile that achieves the highest summit success rates on the mountain. With two dedicated nights on the Shira Plateau and an extra acclimatization day before the summit push, this is the definitive Kilimanjaro experience.
Day to Day Itinerary
Arrival Day — Welcome to Kilimanjaro
Transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport to your hotel in Moshi. A comprehensive pre-climb briefing with your lead guide covers the full 8-day Lemosho profile, equipment, altitude management and summit strategy. Overnight at hotel in Moshi.
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Big Tree Camp
Elevation: 2,100m - 2,780m | Distance: 9km | Time: 3–5 hours
Drive to the remote Londorossi Gate on the western slopes. Trek through the ancient, wildlife-rich forest of the western approach — elephant, buffalo and colobus are possible sightings. Big Tree Camp sits in glorious forest at 2,780m. Overnight camping at Big Tree Camp.
Day 2: Big Tree Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Elevation: 2,780m - 3,600m | Distance: 7km | Time: 4–6 hours
Climb out of the forest onto the extraordinary Shira Plateau. The transition is dramatic — dense forest to vast, open moorland in a matter of metres. Giant heather, everlasting flowers and the first clear summit views accompany your crossing to Shira 1 Camp. Overnight camping at Shira 1 Camp.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Elevation: 3,600m - 3,890m | Distance: 7km | Time: 3–5 hours
Cross the full breadth of the ancient Shira Plateau with Kibo's ice-capped summit filling the eastern horizon. A geological wonder of a landscape — volcanic, flat, vast and silent. Reach Shira 2 Camp with outstanding panoramic views. Overnight camping at Shira 2 Camp.
Day 4: Shira 2 to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower — Acclimatization Day
Elevation: 3,890m - 4,600m ? 3,976m | Distance: 14km | Time: 6–8 hours
Trek to the Lava Tower at 4,600m for the critical climb-high-sleep-low acclimatization benefit, then descend into the remarkable Barranco Valley with its towering groundsel forest. Overnight camping at Barranco Camp.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Elevation: 3,976m - 4,035m | Distance: 5km | Time: 4–5 hours
The Barranco Wall scramble delivers the day's first exhilaration — 300 metres of volcanic cliff with glacier views from the top. Traverse to Karanga Camp for the night. The extra night here, compared to the 7-day route, is the acclimatization gift that measurably improves summit outcomes. Overnight camping at Karanga Camp.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 4,035m - 4,640m | Distance: 4km | Time: 3–4 hours
A short, altitude-gaining climb from Karanga to the high-altitude Barafu Camp — summit base camp at 4,640m. Arrive early, rest, eat, rest again. Sleep by early evening. Midnight wake-up call. Tomorrow you summit Africa. Overnight camping at Barafu Camp.
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak — Descent to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 4,640m - 5,895m ? 3,100m | Distance: 19km | Time: 13–16 hours
The summit day your whole journey has been building toward. Midnight departure from Barafu. Stars above, headlamps glowing, cold air sharp. The ascent through loose scree demands everything. But by the time dawn paints the sky, Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak (5,895m) reward every step. You stand on the highest point in Africa, the highest freestanding mountain on Earth. This moment is yours — breathe it in deeply.
Descent via Mweka Route through sand and alpine desert to the forest camp at Mweka. Hot food, sleeping bag, the sound of silence. Overnight camping at Mweka Camp.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate — Transfer to Moshi
Elevation: 3,100m - 1,640m | Distance: 10km | Time: 3–4 hours
Final descent through Kilimanjaro's southern rainforest to Mweka Gate. KINAPA summit certificate collected, crew farewells said, and your driver waiting to take you back to Moshi. Hot shower, cold drink, celebration dinner. Overnight at hotel in Moshi.
