7 Days Kilimanjaro Machame Route | Best Scenic Trek to Uhuru Peak Tanzania

Tour Overview

The 7-day Machame Route is the most recommended Kilimanjaro trek for good reason — it combines the mountain's most spectacular scenery with the best acclimatization profile. An extra night at Karanga Camp allows your body to adapt thoroughly before the summit push, giving you the strongest possible chance of reaching Uhuru Peak. This is our most popular Kilimanjaro package.

Day to Day Itinerary

Arrival Day — Welcome to Kilimanjaro

Our driver meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfers you to your hotel in Moshi. Your lead guide conducts a thorough pre-climb briefing covering the 7-day Machame Route, daily altitude profiles, acclimatization techniques, gear checks and what to expect during summit night. Enjoy a good dinner and a full night's rest. Overnight at hotel in Moshi.

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Elevation: 1,800m ? 3,021m | Distance: 11km | Time: 5–7 hours

Drive from Moshi to Machame Gate on the lush southwestern slopes. The trail begins dramatically in dense, dripping rainforest where colobus monkeys swing overhead and mountain streams run clear. The ascent follows a forest ridge steadily upward through glorious vegetation before emerging into giant heather country at Machame Camp. Your first clear glimpse of Kibo's summit above the forest line is a powerful and motivating sight. Overnight camping at Machame Camp.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Elevation: 3,021m - 3,840m | Distance: 5km | Time: 4–6 hours

Leaving the last of the giant heather behind, you climb onto the remarkable Shira Plateau — an ancient collapsed volcanic caldera now forming a vast, flat moonscape at altitude. Giant lobelias stand like sentinels alongside the trail, and the summit towers above to the east. Cross the plateau to Shira Camp with sweeping views of the mountain and Tanzanian plains stretching to the horizon. Overnight camping at Shira Camp.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Elevation: 3,840m - 4,600m - 3,976m | Distance: 14km | Time: 6–8 hours

The crucial climb-high-sleep-low acclimatization day. Trek up to the striking Lava Tower at 4,600m for lunch — your body quietly adapts to this high altitude while you eat and rest. Then descend into the beautiful and surprising Barranco Valley, where ancient giant groundsel plants create a primeval forest at nearly 4,000m. Barranco Camp sits beneath the famous Wall. Overnight camping at Barranco Camp.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,976m - 4,035m | Distance: 5km | Time: 4–5 hours

The Barranco Wall scramble opens the day — an exhilarating hands-and-feet ascent of a 300-metre cliff face that delivers one of the best views on the entire mountain. Traverse across the southern slopes past multiple stream gullies to the quiet Karanga Camp, perched above the Karanga Valley stream. Today's shorter hiking day gives your body a vital gift: time and lower elevation gain to consolidate your acclimatization before the summit push. Overnight camping at Karanga Camp.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 4,035m - 4,640m | Distance: 4km | Time: 3–4 hours

A short but altitude-significant climb from Karanga to the rocky, windswept Barafu Camp. The extra acclimatization night in Karanga means your body has had an additional full day to prepare — this is what makes the 7-day Machame summit success rate so high. Arrive early, eat a nutritious hot lunch, rest through the afternoon, and eat again in the early evening. Sleep from around 7pm — your guides wake you at midnight for the summit push. Overnight camping at Barafu Camp.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak — Descent to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,640m - 5,895m - 3,100m | Distance: 19km | Time: 13–16 hours

The greatest day of the trek. Midnight departure under stars. The ascent from Barafu is steep and relentless through volcanic scree, demanding everything from body and mind. Your guides maintain the steady pole pole rhythm that carries you higher with every passing hour. Cold, darkness, thin air — none of it can stop you now. Dawn breaks as you reach Stella Point on the crater rim (5,739m), where the ancient glaciers of Kilimanjaro spread in silence beside you. Forty-five minutes more to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m — the highest point in Africa. Stand there. Breathe it in. You have earned every single second of this moment.

Descend via the Mweka Route through loose scree and then softening terrain all the way down to Mweka Camp at 3,100m. A hearty final camp meal awaits. Overnight camping at Mweka Camp.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate — Transfer to Moshi

Elevation: 3,100m - 1,640m | Distance: 10km | Time: 3–4 hours

One final descent through the rainforest of the Mweka Route to the gate. Collect your KINAPA summit certificate, say farewell to your mountain crew — the porters, cook and guides who made this possible — and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Hot shower, cold celebration drink, and a dinner to remember. Overnight at hotel in Moshi.
