Tour Overview
The Machame Route — known as the Whiskey Route — is widely considered the most scenic path on Kilimanjaro. This 6-day trek follows a circular approach through five spectacular ecosystems, includes the exhilarating Barranco Wall scramble, and uses the climb-high-sleep-low acclimatization strategy that gives trekkers an excellent chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.
Day to Day Itinerary
Arrival Day — Welcome to Kilimanjaro
Transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport to your hotel in Moshi. Your lead guide conducts a full pre-climb briefing covering the Machame Route profile, acclimatization strategy, equipment and safety procedures. Rest well tonight. Overnight at hotel in Moshi.
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Elevation: 1,800m - 3,021m | Distance: 11km | Time: 5–7 hours
Drive 40 minutes from Moshi to Machame Gate on the southwestern slopes of Kilimanjaro. The trail enters dense, humid rainforest immediately — a world of soaring trees, hanging mosses, blue monkeys and mountain streams. The ascent is steady and well-graded, following a ridge that climbs consistently upward. The forest is thick and beautiful, often shrouded in low cloud and mist that adds an ethereal, mysterious quality. Emerge above the forest line at Machame Camp, a scenic flat camp in the giant heather zone with your first clear views of the summit above. Overnight camping at Machame Camp.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Elevation: 3,021m - 3,840m | Distance: 5km | Time: 4–6 hours
Above the forest, the trail climbs through open heather and moorland onto the ancient Shira Plateau — a vast, flat volcanic plateau formed when Kilimanjaro's oldest vent collapsed millions of years ago. Giant lobelias and senecios line the route, their prehistoric forms silhouetted against enormous skies. The plateau is hauntingly beautiful, open and windswept, with Kibo's summit cone rising dramatically to the east. Shira Camp offers a dramatic flat campsite with panoramic views in every direction. Overnight camping at Shira Camp.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Elevation: 3,840m - 4,600m - 3,976m | Distance: 14km | Time: 6–8 hours
Today uses Kilimanjaro's most important acclimatization strategy: climb high, sleep low. The trail ascends steeply toward the dramatic Lava Tower — a 15-metre volcanic plug at 4,600m — where you stop for lunch and allow your body to adapt to the high altitude. The views from here are extraordinary. Then descend into the lush Barranco Valley, where a surprise awaits: the valley is filled with enormous groundsel trees, some 6 metres tall, creating a jungle-like microclimate at nearly 4,000m. Barranco Camp is set beneath the imposing Barranco Wall. Overnight camping at Barranco Camp.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp via Karanga Valley
Elevation: 3,976m - 4,640m | Distance: 9km | Time: 6–8 hours
The Barranco Wall greets you first thing this morning — a 300-metre near-vertical scramble up the cliff face that is the most exhilarating section of the entire Machame Route. It requires hands and feet, trust in your guides, and a head for heights, but the scramble is achievable and the views from the top are sensational. Traverse the southern slopes through the Karanga Valley, descend briefly to a stream for water collection, then make the final climb to the windswept, dramatic Barafu Camp at 4,640m. Rest and prepare carefully for tonight. Summit push begins at midnight. Overnight camping at Barafu Camp.
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak — Descent to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 4,640m - 5,895m - 3,100m | Distance: 19km | Time: 13–16 hours
Midnight departure from Barafu. Headlamp lit, fully layered, you begin the long, steep ascent through darkness up the final volcanic cone. Your guides lead at the essential slow and steady pace — each step deliberate, each breath counted. The cold is intense. The scree is steep and loose. But with each hour, altitude is gained, and as the sky pales to grey and then blazes gold, Stella Point on the crater rim emerges at 5,739m. The final walk to Uhuru Peak takes another 45 minutes along the crater rim with the ice fields shimmering beside you.
Uhuru Peak. 5,895m. The Roof of Africa. Let that sink in. After photos and the summit moment, the long descent follows the Mweka Route down through sand and alpine desert to Mweka Camp. A hot meal and sleeping bag have never felt so good. Overnight camping at Mweka Camp.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate — Transfer to Moshi
Elevation: 3,100m - 1,640m | Distance: 10km | Time: 3–4 hours
Final descent through the forest to Mweka Gate. Collect your KINAPA certificate, say farewell to your mountain crew and transfer to Moshi for a hot shower and celebration. Overnight at hotel in Moshi.
