Day to Day Itinerary

Arrival Day — Welcome to Kilimanjaro

Our driver meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfers you to your hotel in Moshi. Your lead guide conducts a comprehensive pre-climb briefing covering route profiles, altitude sickness awareness, equipment checks and packing guidance. Enjoy a welcome dinner and rest well. Overnight at hotel in Moshi.

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Elevation: 1,860m - 2,720m | Distance: 8km | Time: 3–4 hours

Drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate, complete registration with KINAPA, meet your mountain crew and begin your trek through the lush montane rainforest. Colobus monkeys call from the canopy as you wind steadily upward through giant ferns and ancient Podocarpus trees. Reach Mandara Hut in the early afternoon and take an optional walk to Maundi Crater for your first panoramic views. Overnight at Mandara Hut.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 2,720m - 3,720m | Distance: 12km | Time: 5–6 hours

The forest falls away behind you as you climb into the open moorland. Giant lobelia and senecio tower alongside the path, and the twin summits of Kibo and Mawenzi emerge ahead in their full majesty. The pace is slow and steady — pole pole — as altitude begins to make itself felt. Arrive at Horombo Hut and settle in for your first night in the high alpine zone. Overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

Elevation: 3,720m (rest day) | Optional hike to Zebra Rocks: +200m

This rest day is one of the most important days of your entire climb. Your body quietly adapts to the altitude while you eat, hydrate and recover. Your guide will lead a rewarding acclimatization hike up to the striking Zebra Rocks at 3,980m — dark and light-striped volcanic formations with spectacular 360-degree views of the mountain and the Kenyan plains. The golden rule of acclimatization: climb high, sleep low. This extra day measurably improves your summit success rate. Overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Elevation: 3,720m - 4,703m | Distance: 10km | Time: 5–6 hours

Leaving Horombo, the last of the vegetation disappears as you enter the stark, hauntingly beautiful alpine desert saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi. The trail is open and exposed, offering extraordinary views but demanding respect for the thin air. Arrive at Kibo Hut in the early afternoon. Eat well, drink plenty of fluids, and rest. Midnight wake-up call ahead. Overnight at Kibo Hut.

Day 5: Summit Night — Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak — Descent to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 4,703m - 5,895m ? 3,720m | Distance: 21km | Time: 12–14 hours

Midnight. Stars. Cold. This is the summit night you have been building toward. Your guides lead you up the steep scree toward the crater rim under a blazing sky. The ascent is demanding but your acclimatized body is as ready as it can be. Dawn breaks as you reach Gilman's Point and then Stella Point before the final steps to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m — the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your extraordinary achievement before descending to Horombo Hut for a very well-earned rest. Overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate — Transfer to Moshi

Elevation: 3,720m - 1,860m | Distance: 18km | Time: 4–5 hours

One final morning on the mountain, then the long pleasant descent back through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Collect your KINAPA summit certificate, meet your waiting driver and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi for a shower, celebration and rest. Overnight at hotel in Moshi.
