6 Days Kilimanjaro Rongai Route | Northern Approach from Kenya Border

Tour Overview

The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the remote north, near the Kenyan border, offering trekkers a quieter, more wilderness-like experience on the mountain. The northern slopes receive less rainfall, making it an excellent choice in the wet season. This 6-day route descends via Marangu and suits those seeking a different perspective on the mountain.

Day to Day Itinerary

Arrival Day — Welcome to Kilimanjaro

Transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport to your hotel in Moshi. Your guide holds a detailed pre-climb briefing covering the unique character of the northern Rongai Route, equipment checks and altitude management strategies. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Moshi.

Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Elevation: 1,950m - 2,625m | Distance: 7km | Time: 3–4 hours

Drive approximately 2.5 hours from Moshi through Marangu town and along the northern slopes to the remote Rongai Gate near the Kenya border. Unlike the busy southern routes, the north face of Kilimanjaro feels genuinely wild and untouched. The trail begins in open farmland and quickly enters a different kind of forest — drier and less dense than the southern rainforest. Wildlife sightings, including buffalo and elephant, are more common on this route. Reach Simba Camp on the open moorland as afternoon sunlight turns the heathland golden. Overnight camping at Simba Camp.

Day 2: Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp

Elevation: 2,625m - 3,680m | Distance: 9km | Time: 4–5 hours

The northern moorland stretches wide and open as you gain significant altitude today. The landscape feels remote and primeval, very different from the busier southern routes. Giant heather gives way to open grassland, and the summit cone of Kibo dominates the skyline ahead with increasing magnificence. Kikelewa Cave Camp offers a sheltered campsite in the upper moorland zone. Overnight camping at Kikelewa Camp.

Day 3: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Elevation: 3,680m - 4,330m | Distance: 6km | Time: 3–4 hours

Today's highlight is the approach to Mawenzi Tarn — a small mountain lake sitting beneath the dramatic jagged towers of Mawenzi Peak (5,149m), Kilimanjaro's second summit. The spires of Mawenzi soar above camp in extraordinary volcanic architecture. This high camp offers superb views and is one of the most visually dramatic campsites on any Kilimanjaro route. Rest and acclimatize at this spectacular altitude. Overnight camping at Mawenzi Tarn Camp.

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut

Elevation: 4,330m - 4,703m | Distance: 10km | Time: 4–5 hours

Cross the barren alpine saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo today — a lunar landscape of volcanic rock and gravel stretching for kilometres between the two peaks. The views are immense and the silence is profound at this altitude. Kibo Hut appears ahead as a stone refuge beneath the sheer crater wall. Arrive, rest, eat well and rest again. Summit night begins at midnight. Overnight at Kibo Hut.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak — Descent to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 4,703m - 5,895m ? 3,720m | Distance: 21km | Time: 12–14 hours

Midnight ascent from Kibo Hut up through the scree toward the crater rim. Your Rongai Route guides know this ascent intimately. The darkness, cold and thin air demand everything — and you give it. By dawn, Gilman's Point rewards your effort, followed by the final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Africa is below you. The world is below you. After photos and celebration, descend the Marangu Route to Horombo Hut for a warm meal and rest. Overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate — Transfer to Moshi

Elevation: 3,720m - 1,860m | Distance: 18km | Time: 4–5 hours

Final descent through the moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Collect your KINAPA summit certificate, meet your driver and return to Moshi for your celebration. Overnight at hotel in Moshi.
