The Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Tour combines one of the most beautiful waterfall hikes on the slopes of Kilimanjaro with an authentic Chagga village coffee experience. Wade through streams, hike through banana plantations, swim at the base of a stunning cascade, and learn how traditional Tanzanian coffee is grown, picked, roasted and brewed — a uniquely Tanzanian day.

Day to Day Itinerary

Morning: Hotel Pickup — Drive to Materuni Village

Pick up from your hotel in Moshi at approximately 8:30am. Drive approximately 30–40 minutes through Moshi town and up the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro to the Chagga village of Materuni. As you gain altitude, the views of Moshi town and the surrounding plains below are beautiful. Your local Chagga guide meets you at the village and introduces you to the community, explaining the history and traditions of the Chagga people — Kilimanjaro's indigenous highland farmers who have cultivated these fertile slopes for centuries.

Mid-Morning: Coffee Farm Tour

Walk through the coffee and banana plantation that surrounds the village. Your guide explains every stage of the traditional Chagga coffee process — from identifying ripe coffee cherries on the tree to picking, pulping, fermenting, drying, roasting over an open fire and finally grinding and brewing the beans in the traditional method. At the end of the coffee journey, sit down to a cup of truly fresh, farm-to-cup Kilimanjaro coffee — one of the finest coffees in the world, grown in the volcanic soil of Africa's highest mountain. Nothing compares to it.

Late Morning to Afternoon: Hike to Materuni Waterfall

Set off on the forest trail down to the Materuni Waterfall — a spectacular cascade tumbling from the high slopes of Kilimanjaro through pristine montane forest. The hike takes approximately 45 minutes each way through banana groves, forest streams and lush vegetation alive with birds and butterflies. The waterfall plunges into a natural pool at its base where you can swim in the cool, clear mountain water. The surrounding forest is beautiful and the sound of rushing water and birdsong makes this one of the most peaceful spots on the mountain. Enjoy your packed lunch in the forest near the waterfall.

Afternoon: Return Hike and Transfer to Moshi

Return hike up to Materuni village. Optional banana beer tasting with the village community before the drive back to Moshi, arriving by late afternoon. A wonderfully authentic and relaxing Tanzania cultural experience.
