Tour Overview
Perfect for those with limited time, this 2-day Tanzania safari takes you to Tarangire National Park — Africa's elephant paradise — and the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater, where the Big Five roam freely within a breathtaking volcanic caldera. Compact, affordable and unforgettable, this short safari packs remarkable wildlife encounters into just two days.
Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1: Moshi / Arusha — Tarangire National Park
Depart from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha early in the morning and drive southwest to Tarangire National Park (approximately 2–2.5 hours from Arusha). Tarangire is one of Tanzania's most underrated wildlife gems — famous for having the highest concentration of elephants of any park in Tanzania, and among the highest on the African continent.
Enter the park for a full morning game drive along the banks of the Tarangire River, where elephants gather in enormous herds to drink and bathe. The park's iconic baobab trees, some of them over 1,000 years old, provide a dramatic backdrop for wildlife photography. Look for lion, leopard, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, impala and the rare fringe-eared oryx. The birding is outstanding, with over 550 species recorded in the park.
Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park before continuing to your overnight lodge or camp on the boundary of Ngorongoro. Dinner and overnight at lodge, tented camp or camping (as selected).
Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater — Return to Moshi / Arusha
Rise early for the drive to the Ngorongoro Crater rim — arriving as the first light illuminates one of the world's most extraordinary natural wonders. The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a natural paradise sheltering approximately 25,000 large mammals within its 260 square kilometre basin.
Descend into the crater on a thrilling game drive through grassland, acacia woodland, forest and soda lake shoreline. This is one of Africa's best places to see the Big Five in a single day — lion prides lounge openly in the grass, black rhino graze on the crater floor (one of Tanzania's last stable rhino populations), elephant bulls patrol the forest edge, buffalo herds dot the plains, and the flamingo-fringed Lake Magadi shimmers in the centre.
Enjoy a picnic lunch on the crater floor before ascending back to the rim in the early afternoon. Begin the return drive to Moshi or Arusha, arriving by early evening. Drop-off at your hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport.
